common questions

how long does it take to build a pool:

Construction timelines for a gunite pool can vary depending on several factors such as size and complexity, weather conditions, and material availability. Generally, a basic pool process takes around 10-16 weeks once the permit is approved. Permitting can take from 2-8 weeks depending on the municipality involved. The steps included in the process are as follows: Contract Execution, Design (1 week), Permits (2-8 weeks), Excavation, Plumbing and Electrical, Steel Reinforcement (1 week), Gunite Application (1 week), Gunite cure (1 week), Tile and Coping (1-2 weeks), Decking (1-2 weeks), Equipment set and final utilities (1 week), Plaster and mastic (1 week), and Pool Fill & Startup. (1 week) Get a more detailed look at the steps here. Delays can occur during the construction process, which can impact the overall timeline but we will keep you informed every step of the way to make sure you have expectations that match that of the build. Examples of delays are changes by the owner, material acquisition, weather conditions, utility conflicts, labor shortages, and pandemics.

geometric or freeform:

Deciding whether to build a geometric or freeform pool really comes down to preference. Style and Aesthetics are important factors, for a more modern pool we would suggest Geometric, and for a more natural feel, we recommend freeform. If you have a narrow space geometric pools can maximize the available area. Freeform pools can be better adapted to irregularly shaped and larger lots. Generally speaking, geometric pools tend to maximize useable swim space but can be more difficult to clean. We can help you look at your lot parameters and decide what would best suit your individual situation. Our YouTube channel has 3D Designs of both Geometric and Freeform Pools.

deep DIve or play pool:

If you are planning to use your pool for relaxation and recreation a play pool of 5-6 feet in depth is probably the choice for you. A play pool is also a safer choice if children and non-swimmers will be using the pool allowing them to stand and play in the water. Play pools are more optimal for water sports because the deepest part of the pool is centered in the pool. Deep Dive pools 8+ feet are a good choice for people who choose to add a diving board or jumping rock. These pools must have minimum lengths and widths around the diving area so this will increase the cost of a pool to accommodate these standards.

saltwater or chlorine:

Saltwater pools generally require less maintenance than chlorine pools. Saltwater pools are often considered healthier for the skin, eyes, and hair than chlorine pools and can have therapeutic benefits such as soothing sore muscles and improving skin conditions. Saltwater pools are also easier on swimwear. Properly maintained, saltwater pools are not more corrosive than basic chlorine pools, however, salt residue can cause stains – especially on flagstone and limestone. Saltwater generally costs more to install than chlorine pools due to the cost of the salt cell generator however over time the cost of maintaining a saltwater pool typically equals a chlorine pool since fewer chemicals are required. Ultimately the decision comes down to personal preference.

UV and Ozone:

UV and Ozone (combined systems are known as advanced oxidation process (AOP)) help increase the efficiency of both salt and chlorine systems but do not replace them. For example, an AOP system used in conjunction with a salt or chlorine system will reduce the chlorine demand required to maintain healthy, algae-free water. In the case of salt, this means your salt cell will last longer. In the case of a chlorine system, less chlorine is needed reducing the negative side effects such as the chlorine smell, itchy skin, and burning eyes. If an AOP is combined with Hayward’s new S3 salt system, salt amounts can be reduced by half.

how much does it cost to add a spa:

The cost of adding a spa can vary depending on size, location, and upgrades. On average anywhere from $18,000-$22,000 is our general answer. If you are thinking about adding a spa to your design you can save money by having it placed on the same side as the pool equipment lessening the amount of plumbing run. Sticking to a standard-size spa of 7x7 or 7’ in diameter and choosing to use a standard price tile can also keep the cost down. We can always design and price your pool with a spa and adjust the design if you are wanting to cut back. The addition of infinity edges, rolled beams, and glass tile will increase costs.

how long does it take to build an outdoor kitchen:

The size and complexity of the cabana/kitchen structure can affect the time of a build but generally speaking, it can take anywhere from 4-12 weeks. The stages included in this process are as follows: Design, Permitting, Site Preparation, Construction, and Finishing. Once we have designed your cabana/kitchen we can give you a general idea of what the scope of that project will look like. As always we will keep you informed every step of the way to make sure you are aware of any changes to the build plan.

what standard equipment should I put in an outdoor kitchen:

You can build a patio extension or cabana by itself but here are a few things we think you should keep in mind when designing that kitchen. Just like your indoor kitchen, storage space is an important aspect of an outdoor kitchen. Access doors are convenient but the best storage space in outdoor kitchens are drawers or dry pantries.  Both stay much cleaner compared to access doors alone. One of the most used appliances in any outdoor living area is the trash can. Trash cans can easily be incorporated into the design and take up only a small space. As summers get pretty warm and humid, a fan is something that is sometimes an afterthought and can also help disperse smoke from grills or pellet smokers. Additional outlets are always great to have for items like specialty lighting, TVs, sound equipment, or even misting and heating system. Check out some of our Outdoor Living Designs here.

slat walls or aluminum shutters:

Do I need to put up slat walls or aluminum shutters? Both slat walls and aluminum shutters are a good idea if you are trying to block the sun or add more privacy to your cabana/kitchen. We offer a variety of options for slat or wood wall structures but if you are looking for something a little more flexible, maintenance-free, and longer-lasting - aluminum shutters are a great choice.
